Dr. Steven Kymes is an Assistant Professor (Research Track) in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, with a joint appointment as Research Instructor in the Division of Biostatistics. He is also a Lecturer in the Program in Health Administration. He earned his PhD in Health Services Research in 2001 at Saint Louis University with a double major in Health Outcomes Research and Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He also holds a Masters Degree in Health Administration from St. Louis University and a Bachelors Degree in Business from Washington University. He joined the faculty of Washington University in November of 2001, as an Instructor in Ophthalmology and the Assistant Director of the Vision Research Coordinating Center. He received a joint appointment in the Division of Biostatistics in 2004. He also serves as co-director of the Biostatistics Core Module for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, providing support for basic and clinical scientists in the Department in study design and statistical evaluation. Prior to entering academic life, Dr. Kymes held various management and marketing positions with health care and managed care organizations.

Dr. Kymes’ research interests concern issues related to delivery of health care services, diagnostic testing, and health related quality of life. He is currently conducting or collaborating on studies to evaluate the impact of corneal disease on patient quality of life and cost of medical care, the cost-effectiveness of prevention of glaucoma, the impact of insurance benefit design of the outcomes of health care and the diagnostic accuracy of PET imaging in the diagnosis of lung cancer . In addition to his research work Dr. Kymes teaches courses in health policy, health program evaluation, and epidemiology.
