The HyperGEN Network (Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology) has examined 1,836 White and African-American hypertensive sibling pairs and over 1,300 normotensive offspring of these hypertensive subjects. Important intermediate phenotypes have been measured, including measures of abnormal blood pressure, reactivity to various stressors (changes in lying to standing blood pressure, changes during isometric handgrip and changes during mental arithmetic). Echocardiographic measurements have already been obtained on all subjects.
