Prospective Students

Campus Resources

Washington University offers many resources for its students. We have listed a few below and will provide more details on these and other resources during student orientation.

Housing

Olin Resident Hall is located on the Medical School campus, across the street from Shriner's where the GEMS program suite is located. Rooms are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost per semester is approximately $1700 for a small single room during the academic year 2007-8. The charges for meals are separate from the room charge.

For additional information, consult housing offices located on the Danforth Campus, Residential Life and this link to Off-Campus Housing.

Transportation and Parking

Metrolink, St. Louis' rapid transit system, services all four of the university campuses, and provides convenient transportation to shopping areas, theatres, Lambert Airport, downtown St. Louis, and to Illinois. Each semester all matriculated full-time students may apply for a free U-Pass , which applies to both Metro buses and the MetroLink light-rail system. Many students use MetroLink or bicycles instead of their cars

Garage and surface parking will be available for all matriculated students that require it, but space is very limited. . The cost will be billed to the student on a semester basis and payable with tuition. The prevailing parking fees will apply. Consult the Medical School Transportation Office web site for further information on all of the above..

Libraries:

The Wette Library of the Division of Biostatistics contains over 600 books on epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, statistics, and applications, as well as subscriptions to over 20 scientific journals.

The GEMS Student Library contains many basic texts required and recommended for coursework.

The Bernard Becker Medical Library on the Medical School campus has outstanding resources, which are available to all matriculated students.

Students are eligible to use all Washington University libraries after identification cards are issued. Access to buildings will be identical to privileges provided to the Medical School's other graduate students.

Bookstores:

The Medical School Bookstore, operated by Barnes and Noble, is located on the corner of Euclid and Children’s Place, two blocks southwest of the Program. Its hours are 8:00-6:00 M-Th, 8:00-5:00 Friday, and 11:00-3:00 Saturday. There is a small deli and seating area in which to relax, and read. The café opens at 7:30 a.m. during the week and at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The phone number is 362-3240. Gifts, greeting cards, snacks, beverages, medical and school supplies, and some articles of WU clothing are available at the bookstore in addition to all required books (and a large selection of other volumes). The bookstore on the main campus, WU Danforth Campus Store (tel. 935-5500), is quite well stocked with books, gifts, clothing, supplies, computer equipment and software.

Computing Facilities: Computing facilities are provided by the Division of Biostatistics. A computer core lab is available for student' use at all hours, with access to word processing programs, as well as specific databases and software programs needed to complete their coursework. The Media Center in Becker Medical Library also has a computer lab, which is available to GEMS students.
