Prospective Students

Tuition and Financial Aid

Due to current economic conditions, tuition rates for the academic year 2010-2011 are frozen at last year's rate until further notice.

Full-time Master's Degree students


For full-time Master's Degree students admitted in summer 2010:
For new registrations in academic year 2010-2011, tuition remains set at $1000 per credit hour for all full-time and part-time students registered for the M.S.degree. The tuition charge iincludes mandatory student health, disability, and life insurance fees. For the GEMS M.S. program of 35 credits, therefore, the total tuition charge is $35,000 if completed in the first year. If, for any reason, the student must continue course work or research the following year, the new tuition charge will apply.

1. Matriculating M.S. students may receive partial tuition remission, based on merit. Need-based remission will be considered on a cae by case basis. No remission is given for Certficate candidates.

2. M.S. Clinical track students may receive additional tuition remission depending on how much credit they receive for previous clinical training and experience (up to the maximum of 6 credits).

3. In the case of junior faculty or staff pursuing the GEMS program, they may seek tuition assistance from their Departments/Programs.

4. The first summer, intensive courses (11 credits total) may well qualify for 50% tuition remission by the university for qualified Washington University employees (up to seven credits per semester). It is the responsibility of the student to apply for this (see the Human Resources web site for details).

5. Tuition is payable incrementally at least one week before each semester begins. Students can check their account status via WebSTAC. Tuition paid by the individual should be mailed to:

For Members of the Washington University Community only


Washington University faculty, staff, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students, who take individual courses or courses toward the GEMS Certificate, receive 10% tuition remission toward the standard rate. WU undergraduate students are excluded from receiving the discount.

•  For course credit: $900 per credit hour (discounted rate)

•  For official audit: $1000 per course (discounted rate)

Auditors: Students wishing to audit individual courses must first obtain the permission of the course master. To begin the process, contact the Program Manager. Acceptance will be determined by eligibility and the class enrollment. Auditors will be required to register for selected courses with the Program Administrator and to pay the appropriate tuition for the course through the Registrar's office. No one is allowed to "sit in" on a course without paying tuition.

Expectations for Auditing courses

  1. Audit students will not be given access to computer labs or accounts.
  2. Homework will not be collected or graded.
  3. Auditors will not participate in exams.
  4. Auditor will not receive credit. The designation of "audit" will be received upon successful completion if attendance was regular.

  2. Computational Statistical Genetics (M21-621)
  3. Independent Research (M21-610)
  4. Independent Study (M21-599)
  5. Lab Courses M21-505A, 515A, 550A in summer and 5485 in fall.

Tuition is due one week before the first class meeting date.

If departments are paying for their employees, one of the following forms must be filled out by the employee, approved by the department/division, and forwarded to the Benefits Office as noted on the form.

For Participants not affiliated with Washington University


Students not affiliated with Washington University are welcome in our courses if they meet the stated prerequisites. Tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year have been frozen at the 2008-2009 rate, due to current economic conditions.

•  For course credit: $1000 per credit hour

•  For official audit: $1200 per course

Auditors


Students wishing to audit individual courses must first obtain the permission of the course master. To begin the process, contact the Program Manager. Acceptance will be determined by eligibility and the class enrollment. Auditors will be required to register for selected courses with the Program Administrator and to pay the appropriate tuition for the course through the Registrar's office. No one is allowed to "sit in" on a course without paying tuition.

Financial Aid: Washington University Medical School Resources


Merit and need scholarships are offered to some full-time M.S. candidates at the time of admission.

Federal and private loans may be available. All students are encouraged to consult with the counsellors in the School of Medicine Office of Student Financial Planning for assistance in obtaining financial aid.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy:


If a student withdraws from the program, such notice must be given to the Program Director in writing. tuition will be refunded fully (100%) if the written notice is given before the start of any classes. If the notice is given after classes begin, the refund will be prorated by the number of days left in the semester.

If a student withdraws from individual courses, refund will be calculated on the following basis:

Before class starts 100%
During the first week of classes 80%
After the first week of classes Prorate or 60% whichever is less.

Summer courses are prorated by the number of days left. Normally one day of an intensive summer course is equivalent to one week of fall or spring courses.
