HERITAGE Family Study

HEalth, RIsk factors, exercise Training And GEnetics

The HERITAGE Family Study was designed to evaluate the role of genetic and non-genetic factors in cardiovascular, metabolic, and hormonal responses to aerobic exercise training. A consortium of 5 institutions is involved in carrying out the study, which was initiated in 1992 with funds from the NHLBI. Extensive data were gathered on a total of 101 White and 127 Black families, both before and after 20-weeks of supervised training. The data include many variables in the general areas of body composition, cardiovascular risk factors like lipids and blood pressure, steroid hormones, glucose/insulin homeostasis (IVGTT), and dietary, activity and other life style habits. Cell lines were established, and a few hundred markers have already been genotyped for association and linkage studies. For a description of the study, see Bouchard et al. (The HERITAGE Family Study: Aims, design, and measurement protocol. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 27(5):721-729, 1995).
